Atatürk Memorial Day, Sports and Youth Day

Today Turkey celebrates the Atatürk Memorial Day, Sports and Youth Day.

Today Turkey celebrates the Atatürk Memorial Day, Sports and Youth Day. Sports events and concerts are held across the country on May 19 each year. Buildings and streets are decorated with flags and pictures of the founder of the Republic of Turkey. The history of the beginning of the celebration dates back to 1019. On May 19, 1019, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk organized a popular uprising against the division of Turkey after the First World War. Turkey as an ally of Germany was on the losing side. Due to the following consequences, the Ottoman Empire should be divided between the Entente countries. After the declaration of the Independent Turkish Republic in 1923, Ataturk himself proposed to celebrate this day as a youth day. In 1981 this day was renamed Atatürk Memorial Day, Youth and Sports day.
